Firms that give staff mobile phones packed with consumer data to use may find they are having to come to terms with the security challenges posed by Android devices, which are now the most popular of all.
Charles Arthur, a journalist and technology editor at the Guardian, has told the Guardian Tech Weekly podcast that the brand has overtaken Research in Motion (RIM) – makers of the BlackBerry range.
He said the company has risen to prominence in recent years, knocking the likes of RIM and Nokia off their perch at the top of the market.
"Apple sort of seeded the whole iPhone disruption back in 2007. Android came along and made it affordable and RIM really has not had an answer to that," explained Mr Arthur.
It means firms that use Android devices may now have to increasingly find ways to ensure they are secure from hackers.
Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs, told Reuters in December that he believes there are flaws in mobile technology that make users more vulnerable to data threats.
