Firms have been reminded that despite the significant surge in the amount of data available to them, the quality of it remains just as important as ever.
John Parkinson, head of the Global Program Management Office at insurance provider Axis Capital, writing a piece for CIO Insight, explained the more information data management bosses are responsible for, the harder it is to be accurate.
As such, it is important to assess exactly what is required and necessary and what is not.
The author went on to advise people to sort their data into a format that makes it easy to understand, as well as to invest in a retention policy that ensures only relevant information remains in place.
Mr Parkinson added that data characterisation is "critical" to businesses, so they must have plenty of expertise in place in order to be able to predict how it will grow and change.
Clive Taylor, founding director of Sesai Consulting Limited, recently advised companies to also be aware of their data security responsibilities and to act accordingly.
