Many firms may need to assess the way they conduct their data management in the future, as the European Union looks to change its data protection legislation.

Viviane Reding, the vice-president of the European Commission, said that changes were needed to help keep internet users' details private and allow businesses to cut red tape.

"Only if consumers trust that their data is protected will they entrust companies with it … We need individuals to be in control of their information," she said in a speech to the DLD conference in Munich.

She stated that the new modifications will hopefully streamline and simplify the rules, as the current system is too expensive and contradictory.

The changes are set to be announced on January 25th.

Ireland's data protection commissioner Billy Hawkes recently called for social network users' data to be better protected after a High Court judge refused to prevent newspapers from showing images from a video that appeared on Facebook, which wrongly identified a man as having avoided paying a taxi fare.
