Data management chiefs within the government have started work on signing up suppliers to its new £4 billion IT framework.
A note in the Official Journal of the European Union, reported by the Guardian, shows that successful bidders will be asked to provide equipment and information solutions to public sector organisations for two years.
Desktop services, including computers, laptops and other hardware, will form a key part of the deal.
But as a reflection of the modern way of working, contractors will also supply tablets and notebooks for use on the go. Indeed, five companies will be chosen just to provide tablet devices.
The Government Procurement Service will make a decision on which companies will provide Westminster with the latest data storage solutions in due course.
Britain's government recently agreed to make changes to the way some service providers hold data from internet users, following the threat of legal action over the issue from the European Commission.
