The importance of safe and secure data management and protection has been illustrated once again by a case in India.

According to the Times of India, cyber criminals from the Chinese group Evil Shadow Team are alleged to have infiltrated the company's website on Sunday (February 12th).

They have stolen a host of data, including login identifications and passwords belonging to consumers who have previously bought items from Microsoft.

It is said by the newspaper that many of the details were stored by the IT firm without any form of encryption and were available in a plain text file.

Observers could also be concerned that one of the world's top computer companies was breached in this way, perhaps suggesting other firms need to keep a tighter rein on security.

The BBC this week reported that the hacking group Anonymous may have breached the CIA website, following similar attacks on the FBI and the Department of Justice.
