Ensuring the security of information is perhaps the greatest challenge facing data management bosses at British companies.

One way to boost their chances of achieving this is to educate staff within the firm so they are able to contribute to the safety of data.

Kevin Wharram, an independent IT security consultant, said passing on knowledge to staff is likely to be a "fundamental step" in information protection within the next five years.

"You have to understand what data is where, who has access to that data and what data you are holding," he stated.

Mr Wharram went on to note that Google will soon be replaced by search options such as Siri, which present new threats rather than the malware risks currently dealt with by firms.

The expert last week recommended Apple products to businesses that use mobile technology, as the company checks all of its applications for threats prior to releasing them to consumers.
